Wizz Air UK to End Vienna Services

Wizz Air UK has announced the termination of all flights from the Austrian capital. The airline will discontinue services from both London Gatwick (LGW) and London Luton (LTN) airports. Flights from London Gatwick and Bilbao (BIO) to Vienna will cease as of October 26, 2025, and the last route from London Luton will end on March 15, 2026. This decision will notably affect travelers planning visits to Vienna, particularly during its peak winter tourist season.

    Reasons for Service Withdrawal

Wizz Air had originally set up its Vienna base in 2018 to expand its European routes. However, increased costs at Vienna International Airport (VIE), such as airport fees, taxes, and ground handling expenses, have rendered operations economically unfeasible. Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, stated that although difficult, this withdrawal is necessary for maintaining the airline’s competitive edge. Employees based in Vienna will be offered jobs elsewhere within the Wizz Air network.

    Details on Flight Cancellations

Currently, Wizz Air operates two daily flights from London Gatwick to Vienna, which are reduced to one during the winter months. These flights will systematically be reduced before their complete termination in 2026.

    Passenger Options for Cancelled Flights

    • Passengers booked to travel to Vienna (VIE) before October 26, 2025, will face no changes.
    • Those with travel plans post this date will receive direct communication from Wizz Air via email or the airline’s app.
    • Options for affected customers include:
      • Receiving a full refund in WIZZ credits for use on other routes.
      • Rebooking on an alternative Wizz Air flight.
    • No cash refunds will be offered. Alternative airlines such as easyJet (U2), Ryanair (FR), and British Airways (BA) continue offering flights to Vienna.
    • Passengers are also reminded of flights to nearby locations such as Budapest (BUD), which is a 2.5-hour train ride from Vienna, and Bratislava (BTS), roughly an hour’s drive away.

    Broader Network Reductions

The exit from Vienna is part of a wider network contraction by Wizz Air, which also involves discontinuing flights from Liverpool (LPL) to Budapest (BUD) on October 24, 2025, and from Glasgow (GLA) to Budapest on October 25, 2025. These strategic cuts aim to reinforce Wizz Air’s focus on markets with higher demand and less competition.

    Industry Reactions

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary has criticized Wizz Air’s strategic choices, predicting a potential loss of independence within three to five years due to European market consolidation. Wizz Air has rejected these claims, emphasizing its commitment to serving Central and Eastern European markets where low-cost travel demand is rising.
