Airbus A350F: A New Entrant in the Freighter Market
The Airbus A350F is Airbus’s latest venture into the freighter segment, introducing a state-of-the-art widebody cargo aircraft. The A350F incorporates a fresh design with lightweight composite materials and embodies Airbus’s innovative approach, positioning it as a significant competitor in the global widebody freighter fleet, where Boeing has traditionally been dominant. According to Airbus, the A350F promises “unbeatable efficiency” and is expected to enter service by mid-2027.

How the A350F Stands Out
The A350F is Airbus’s first dedicated widebody freighter, unlike its previous smaller freighters or passenger-to-freighter conversions. It is crafted from more than 70% advanced composite materials, significantly decreasing its weight and improving corrosion resistance. With a maximum payload of 111 tonnes, the A350F surpasses the A330-200F and provides 10% more capacity than the Boeing 777F. The aircraft also adheres to ICAO’s latest emissions and noise standards, addressing growing global airport restrictions.
Competition with Boeing 777-8F
The A350F’s main competitor is Boeing’s upcoming 777-8F, expected to enter service in 2028. While the 777-8F boasts a higher payload capacity of up to 118 tonnes, equating to two extra pallets compared to the A350F, the A350F excels in missions involving lower-density cargo, ideal for the burgeoning e-commerce industry. Additionally, the A350F has a slightly longer range of 4,700 NM.
Success of the A350 Program
Since its debut, the A350 passenger variant has been a commercially successful venture for Airbus, leading to over 1,000 orders for the A350-900 variant and more than 360 commitments for the -1000 variant. As of September 2025, nearly 675 A350 units were delivered, with 65 orders secured for the A350F model.

Future Prospects and Challenges
The A350F is yet to complete its maiden flight, but Airbus plans to start test flights the following year, targeting a 2026 debut before entering service in 2027. If the A350F matches the success of its passenger family, Boeing’s dominance in the freighter market could be challenged.
