Virgin Australia Introduces In-Cabin Pet Travel
Virgin Australia has become the first airline in the country to allow pets in the cabin. The initial pets-in-cabin flight will depart from Melbourne Airport to the Gold Coast on October 16, 2025. This service will function as a trial until January 30, 2026, to evaluate its effectiveness.
Introduction of In-Cabin Pet Service
Tickets for pets, limited to small dogs and cats, are offered at an introductory rate of $149 per animal, per flight. Initially, each flight will accommodate just four pets. Virgin Australia aims to create new economic opportunities in the tourism and pet travel sectors and offer Australians more freedom to travel with their small companions.
Growing Demand for Pet-Friendly Travel
With about 70% of Australian households owning a pet, there has been increasing demand for pet-friendly travel options. Inspired by similar services in Europe and the United States, Virgin Australia first announced its plans in March 2024. The airline has since collaborated with international carriers, animal welfare organizations, and accessibility groups to develop a program prioritizing animal welfare and passenger comfort. Insights and feedback from the trial will shape plans for broader implementation across the domestic network next year.
Innovative Travel Options from Virgin Australia
Dave Emerson, Virgin Australia Group Chief Executive Officer, commented on the launch, “Pets on flights is another example of Virgin Australia leading with new and enhanced service offerings. Innovation has been a hallmark of Virgin Australia. We were the first to offer online check-in, baggage tracking, and globally, reward guests for sitting in the middle seat (through our Middle Seat Lottery promotion).”
Addressing Hygiene and Allergy Concerns
According to Dr. Kelly Bofkin, Virgin Australia’s Group Medical Officer, the airline is rigorously addressing allergy and hygiene concerns related to pets in the cabin. Ensuring the health and comfort of all passengers has been central to the service’s development, guided by customer feedback since the 2024 announcement. Virgin Australia’s aircraft are equipped with advanced HEPA filters that eliminate over 99% of airborne particles, including pet dander. The cabin airflow is designed to circulate from ceiling to floor, refreshing the air 20–30 times per hour, significantly reducing allergen spread.
Safety Measures for Pet Travel
- Designated “buffer zones” include two rows in front of and two rows behind the pet seating area.
- Only four pets weighing under eight kilograms are allowed per flight, with seats restricted to window positions in two dedicated rows (18A, 18F, 20A, and 20F).
- Pets will not be permitted under any other seats on the aircraft.
Guidelines for Traveling with Pets
- Only small cats and dogs, with a combined weight not exceeding eight kilograms per carrier, are allowed.
- Pets must be in approved soft-sided, leak-proof carriers no larger than 44 cm (L) × 26 cm (W) × 28 cm (H). An absorbent mat is required inside the carrier.
- During the flight, pets must remain secured in their carrier under the owner’s seat.
- Pets are not allowed outside of the carrier at any time onboard.
- Passengers traveling with pets must be up to date on vaccinations. Such passengers will not have access to Virgin Australia lounges, adhering to food safety regulations.
