United Airlines Introduces Starlink on Boeing 737 Fleet
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified United Airlines’ Boeing 737-800 narrowbody aircraft to be equipped with Starlink. The inaugural commercial flight featuring Starlink Wi-Fi is set to take place on October 15, 2025. This certification marks a significant technological advancement for United Airlines’ in-flight connectivity offerings.
Boeing 737-800 Certification and Upcoming Flights
United will launch its first Starlink-equipped Boeing 737-800 from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This development follows five months after a successful Starlink deployment on an Embraer E175 regional jet. With 141 Boeing 737-800s in its fleet averaging 21.6 years in age, United anticipates gradual fleet-wide Starlink system installations.
High-Speed Connectivity for MileagePlus Members
MileagePlus loyalty program members flying domestically on United’s 737-800s will gain access to complimentary Wi-Fi at speeds up to 250 Mbps. United is in the process of installing Starlink across its fleet, aiming to eventually cover all aircraft types currently equipped or slated for installation. This new system offers improved in-flight experiences, including streaming services and gaming.
United Airlines’ Starlink Ambitions
During the previous year, United agreed with SpaceX to provide free Starlink Wi-Fi to its fleet. Currently, United’s fleet comprises 1,052 aircraft with an average age of 16.8 years. The Starlink system promises easier setup, reduced weight, and lower fuel consumption.
Securing a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for each aircraft type requires the FAA’s approval for design, installation, and testing for safety and reliability. The installation process for Starlink takes about four days, significantly less than the standard airborne Wi-Fi setup.
Global and Domestic Starlink Expansion Among Airlines
Other airlines are also meeting passenger demand for superior in-flight connectivity. Hawaiian Airlines has equipped its Airbus A321 and Airbus A330-200 with Starlink, and the Alaska Air Group plans to begin installations starting in 2026. International airlines like airBaltic, Air France, and Qatar Airways are similarly adopting Starlink, partnering with SpaceX for enhanced connectivity.
