    Remarkable Career with Singapore Airlines

For nearly five decades, Mr. Ng Yak Keng dedicated his career to Singapore Airlines (SQ), globally recognized for its exceptional service. Starting his journey at age 21, his tenure stretched across various international destinations such as Perth (PER), Jakarta (CGK), New York (JFK), and Adelaide (ADL), marking him as one of the longest-serving cabin crew members in the airline’s history.

Throughout his career, Mr. Ng met world leaders, celebrities, and millions of passengers, consistently embodying the professionalism and warmth that characterize the Singapore Airlines brand.

    Meeting Mr. Ng

In his Tampines home, Mr. Ng still reflects the image of a seasoned steward. At 67, his polished demeanor and professional habits remain unchanged, with neatly slicked hair and the courteous language that defined his 46-year career.

For Mr. Ng, his role at Singapore Airlines was more than just employment; it was his calling. “I never thought of leaving the airline, because this has been my life,” he stated, surrounded by a collection of meticulously kept flight schedules that tell the story of countless journeys.

    Beginning at a Young Age

Mr. Ng embarked on his airline career following national service. Encouraged by friends, he applied to the airline, which was recruiting at the time. The interview process was quick, resulting in his immediate acceptance. “That was the start of my adventure with Singapore Airlines,” he recounted.

Training, which lasted only two months compared to today’s longer programs, transformed his life. His first assignment was a flight to Perth aboard a Boeing 707, which he fondly remembers, despite a humorous run-in with Australian immigration.

    Lessons Learned Globally

Mr. Ng’s extensive travel brought rich experiences through diverse cultures and histories. These experiences broadened his perspective and enhanced his emotional intelligence, vital for his role in the airline. Encounters with celebrities and notable leaders added to his career highlights.

Mr. Ng values the camaraderie among his colleagues as one of the job’s significant rewards. In an era before modern communication tools, layovers facilitated deep friendships among crew members, fostering teamwork essential for successful flights.

    Challenges and Sacrifices

The role did come with challenges. Handling medical emergencies with composure was part of the job, along with the personal sacrifices of missing family events. Reflecting on these sacrifices, Mr. Ng maintained that solving situations with honesty and humility helped mitigate tensions.

Frequent travel resulted in sleep challenges, including the disorientation of jet lag, but professionalism always prevailed as crew members entered the cabin prepared to serve.

    A Collector of Memories

At home, Mr. Ng maintains a collection of vintage items and Singapore Airlines memorabilia, reflecting the evolution of aviation from his unique perspective. These collections include old steward uniforms and documents that contrast with today’s casual travel atmosphere.

    A New Chapter Begins

Mr. Ng’s final flight took place in July 2025, marking the end of an illustrious career. Colleagues revered him as a “legend,” acknowledging his outstanding service record.

In retirement, Mr. Ng stays active and embraces changes to his identity, seeing this new phase as an opportunity for self-discovery beyond his longstanding career at Singapore Airlines.
