    Introduction of Qantas’ Airbus A321XLR

Qantas has now made ticket sales available for the first commercial operations involving their newly-acquired Airbus A321XLR narrowbody aircraft. This eagerly anticipated aircraft will commence service within two weeks, joining the Australian flag carrier’s main domestic routes.

Expansion Plans for the A321XLR Fleet

Although Qantas has currently taken delivery of only two Airbus A321XLR aircraft, the airline plans extensive expansion with more than 40 additional units on order. This increased rollout aims to enhance both domestic and longer-haul international services.

    Inaugural Routes and Schedule

The new Airbus A321XLR will debut on commercial routes starting Thursday, September 25th. Initial operations will connect Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) with Melbourne (MEL) and Perth (PER). Key inaugural flights include:

    • QF645: Departing Sydney at 10:35, with arrival in Perth at 13:35.
    • QF650: Returning from Perth at 14:35, landing in Sydney by 20:40.
    • QF467: Leaving Sydney at 16:20, arriving in Melbourne at 17:55.
    • QF484: Departing Melbourne at 18:50, with arrival back in Sydney at 20:15.

Markus Svensson, CEO of Qantas Domestic, expressed excitement about integrating the new aircraft into service, highlighting both customer and crew anticipation.

    Future Fleet Expansion

Qantas currently operates just two A321XLRs, both less than a year old. These aircraft are named ‘Great Ocean Road’ (VH-OGA) and ‘Outback Way’ (VH-OGB), with a third, ‘Seven Peaks Walk’ (VH-OGC), set to join the fleet in November 2025. By year’s end, Qantas expects to have a total of seven A321XLRs, with overall plans for 48 in the fleet.

    Benefits of the A321XLR

The Airbus A321XLR is considered revolutionary within Qantas’ narrowbody fleet, replacing the Boeing 737-800s. Advantages include:

    • Extended range, flying approximately 3,000 km further.
    • 60% more overhead storage.
    • Better noise performance and lower emissions per seat.
    • Availability of fast, free WiFi and larger windows for enhanced views.

    Technical Specifications

The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines, boasting improved efficiency. First flown on June 15, 2022, the A321XLR measures 44.51m in length with a wingspan of 35.80m and a height of 11.76m.
