Qantas Introduces Airbus A321XLR to Fleet
Qantas Airways has announced the introduction of the Airbus A321XLR to its fleet, a major development in its ongoing fleet renewal strategy. The new aircraft is available for commercial bookings and is set to operate between Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) and Melbourne Airport (MEL), as well as Sydney (SYD) to Perth Airport (PER) starting from September 25, pending regulatory clearance.
New A321XLR Routes and Features
Qantas will begin operating the first two of these aircraft, named Great Ocean Road (VH-OGA) and Outback Way (VH-OGB), on the specified routes. A third aircraft, Seven Peaks Walk (VH-OGC), is in the final stages of preparation in Hamburg and will join the fleet by November.
The Airbus A321XLR is designed to enhance passenger comfort with wider seats and larger windows, compared to the Boeing 737 it replaces. It offers free high-speed Wi-Fi to all passengers and features overhead bins with 60 percent more storage capacity.

Technological Advancements and Sustainability
The A321XLR is equipped with Pratt & Whitney’s Geared Turbo Fan engines (PW1100G-JM), which are designed to reduce noise and decrease carbon emissions per seat compared to similar aircraft.
Global and Domestic Service Expansion
The A321XLR’s remarkable range of approximately 8,700 kilometers opens up new possibilities for Qantas to operate domestic and short-haul international routes, including potential flights to South East Asia and the Pacific Islands. This range advantage will accommodate destinations previously inaccessible with the existing narrow-body fleet.
Qantas plans to expand its A321XLR order to 48 aircraft, marking the company’s largest fleet renewal to date. By the end of the year, Qantas expects to have seven A321XLRs delivered. Notably, sixteen of these aircraft will incorporate lie-flat Business seats with seat-back entertainment screens for longer routes, while the rest will focus on domestic and regional flights.
Bookings for these aircraft commenced at 9 am on the day of the announcement via Qantas.com, with inaugural flights including Sydney to Perth (QF645), Perth to Sydney (QF650), Sydney to Melbourne (QF467), and Melbourne to Sydney (QF484).
All flights are pending regulatory approval.
Enhanced Capacity and Sustainability Efforts
The A321XLR enhances seat capacity by approximately 13 percent compared to the Boeing 737, without sacrificing legroom. It also increases premium seating by around 66 percent, while delivering lower carbon emissions per passenger on similar routes, aligning with Qantas’s sustainability objectives.
