JetBlue Airways Marks Milestone Retirement of the Embraer E190
JetBlue Airways (B6) has achieved a significant milestone in its 25-year history by retiring the Embraer E190 after its final revenue flight, marking its transition to an all-Airbus fleet led by the A220-300. This strategic shift enhances the airline’s efficiency, performance, and passenger comfort while honoring the pivotal role the E190 played in its expansion from key locations such as New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). JetBlue first introduced services at these airports in 2005.
JetBlue Retires Embraer E190
The last revenue flight of the Embraer E190, flight number 190, operated from JFK to BOS, signifying the end of an era for JetBlue. Both cities hosted celebratory gate-side events attended by customers, crew members, and special guests to commemorate nearly 20 years of service. Chief Operating Officer Warren Christie, who also captained the inaugural flight in 2005, led this final journey.
“I am proud to operate today’s flight, as it marks a significant evolution of our fleet,” said Christie. “The E190 was instrumental in our early years and proved to deliver on critical connectivity in short-haul markets, allowing us to grow into new regions, especially in our New York and Boston focus cities. As one of the originating crewmembers to launch the E190 at JetBlue, it is an honor to pilot our final E190 revenue flight.”
JetBlue was the first airline worldwide to operate the Embraer E190, configured to seat 100 passengers. This aircraft greatly expanded the airline’s network by providing critical connectivity in short-haul markets and regional destinations from key hubs.
Advancing with Airbus A220
Retiring the E190 coincides with JetBlue’s delivery of its 50th Airbus A220, with 52 out of 100 ordered aircraft now in service. This streamlines the fleet to the Airbus A320 and A220 families, improving economic efficiency and the customer experience. The Airbus A220 facilitates new route opportunities, particularly in transcontinental markets, with its extended range and lower operating costs, while fostering JetBlue’s JetForward strategy with its superior fuel efficiency.
Enhanced Passenger Features
JetBlue’s A220 cabins enhance passenger experience with 140 Collins Meridian seats, which are the widest in the fleet. Additional features include spacious overhead bins, custom seatback storage, in-seat power options with AC, USB-A, and USB-C ports, extra-large windows, fast and complimentary Fly-Fi, and personalized in-flight entertainment available at every seat.
