Rideshare Pickup Adjustments at JFK Airport

Passengers of Delta Air Lines (DL) and JetBlue Airways (B6) arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) now need to take extra steps to book an Uber or Lyft. The airport authority has shifted most rideshare pickups away from terminals 4, 5, and 7, requiring travelers to utilize shuttles or the AirTrain.

    Impact on Passenger Experience

This change poses difficulties for families, international travelers, and those carrying heavy luggage. While lounges offer comfort for departures, returning home from JFK has become more challenging.

    Specific Changes by Terminal

    • Terminal 4 (Delta Airlines and other partners): Initially started to relocate rideshare pickups over a year ago. Pickups are permitted outside the terminal only until noon, after which passengers need to take a shuttle to a designated lot.
    • Terminal 5 (JetBlue, Sun Country, and Cape Air): Passengers must take the AirTrain to Howard Beach to meet Uber or Lyft.
    • Terminal 7 (Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Ethiopian Airlines, etc.): Requires passengers to use the AirTrain to Howard Beach.
    • Terminal 8 (American Airlines and Oneworld partners): Allows curbside rideshare pickups.

    Challenges for Passengers

At Terminal 4, which serves Delta, the new pickup arrangement adds time and effort, with some travelers reporting a $20 surcharge for Uber pickups exacerbating the situation. Terminal 5 users must travel via AirTrain to Howard Beach, complicating the process. Some frequent flyers choose to call a car service from the TWA Hotel to avoid this hassle, as reported by View from the Wing.

    Construction and Its Effects

JFK is undergoing significant redevelopment, yet congestion and bottlenecks remain. The rideshare restrictions further complicate arrivals at terminals 4, 5, and 7, unlike Terminal 8, which retains easier access to curbside pickups, offering a competitive edge for American Airlines.

    Key Takeaways

Passengers should be aware that multiple transfers may add 20–30 minutes before they can connect with a rideshare vehicle, particularly if traveling with multiple bags or children. Many are now opting to request a ride only once reaching the Howard Beach lot.
