Embraer E-Jets E2 Receives South African Certification
Embraer’s E-Jets E2 family, comprising the E190-E2 and E195-E2 models, has been granted Type Acceptance Certification by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). This announcement was made by Embraer on September 3, 2025.
Implications for Airlink
This certification is instrumental for Airlink, which has recently entered into an agreement with lessor Azorra to acquire 10 new E195-E2 airplanes. These aircraft can accommodate up to 136 passengers in a two-by-two seating format.
Endorsements and Market Potential
- Stephan Hannemann, Senior Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, stated that this approval underscores the aircraft’s relevance for the African market, enabling new operational opportunities.
- Embraer highlights the E190-E2 and E195-E2 as highly fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft, offering 17.3% and 29% improvements in fuel efficiency per seat over previous E-Jet models.
Strategic Importance for Airlink
Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, emphasized that the E2 series is well-aligned with Airlink’s growth objectives across Southern Africa. Airlink CEO de Villiers Engelbrecht indicated that increased capacity and extended range will allow the airline to meet growing route demands and broaden its network reach.
Technical Collaboration
The certification process was supported by Pratt & Whitney, whose PW1900G engines—used for the E2—received concurrent certification in South Africa.
