Biman Bangladesh Airlines Faces Romance Scam Allegations

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG) is under scrutiny following serious allegations against two of its flight attendants. The accusations involve romance scams targeting business class passengers—a situation that has resulted in complaints to both the airline and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh.

    Details of Accusations

Two flight attendants, who are close friends, allegedly orchestrated scams enticing wealthy passengers such as executives and expatriates. They reportedly used their professional roles to build trust with victims by aligning their flight schedules to coincide with the passengers’, ultimately seeking gifts, money, and intimate materials for blackmail purposes.

A report from One Mile at a Time (OMAAT) described the operation as involving brief relationships that ended abruptly after the attendants acquired valuables including iPhones, diamond rings, and nearly $18,000 in wedding funds.

    Victim Experiences and Claims

One victim, a businessman based in Doha, encountered one of the flight attendants at a luxury hotel and was led to believe a serious relationship was forming. The attendant participated in travel with him from Doha (DOH) to Dhaka (DAC), allegedly altering her rosters to accompany him. This relationship concluded with a sudden breakup, resulting in demands for silence under threat by her associate.

Another victim from Dhaka connected with the other attendant via Facebook, involving multiple Biman business class flights for meetings. She promised marriage, leading him to invest in a diamond ring and other wedding expenses. Following escalating demands for more valuables and intimate photos, he eventually filed a criminal case.

    Defense and Investigation

The accused attendants have offered defenses, suggesting mutual misunderstandings. One cited the Doha victim’s behavior, including heavy drinking, as a reason for ending contact. The allegations, if substantiated, exploit Biman’s reputation, suggesting that the attendants used their positions for deceptive practices. Ongoing investigations focus on whether such patterns are prevalent among professionals like doctors and executives.

    Ethical Implications

If these allegations are confirmed, they expose a serious breach of trust and ethical conduct within the aviation industry. The airline must act to protect its reputation and passenger safety. Victims often ignored warning signs, such as immediate demands for gifts, highlighting the importance of personal awareness to prevent such scams.

Enhancing awareness of romance scams, specifically in aviation contexts, can help individuals avoid similar situations in the future.
