ATR’s Initiative on Hybrid-Electric Regional Aircraft

ATR has revealed plans to introduce the world’s first hybrid-electric regional aircraft by 2030, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable aviation. Supported by the European Union‘s Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking, this initiative places ATR at the forefront of next-generation, low-emission air travel.

    Key Development Programs

Unveiled in Toulouse on September 9, 2025, the project will see ATR spearhead two major developmental programs within Clean Aviation’s Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft initiative. The aim is to demonstrate hybrid-electric propulsion, advanced propeller systems, and electrified aircraft technologies using a regional test bed aircraft.

    HERACLES Project and Objectives

The centerpiece of this initiative is ATR’s HERACLES project, which seeks to create an ultra-efficient regional aircraft concept. This concept incorporates hybrid-electric propulsion, high-performance batteries, and a thermal engine capable of operating on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Flight testing is set to occur under the DEMETRA program, utilizing an ATR 72-600.

An ATR spokesperson remarked, “The introduction of a hybrid-electric regional aircraft by 2030 represents a transformative step for aviation. By integrating advanced propulsion systems with sustainable fuels, we are leading the way to cleaner and more efficient regional air travel.”

    Collaboration with Industry Leaders

Industry leaders such as Safran, Collins Aerospace, and Pratt & Whitney Canada will collaborate with ATR in advancing this project. This effort underscores Europe’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions in air transport, while preserving the essential role of regional aviation.

    Impact on Regional Aircraft Market

ATR’s hybrid-electric initiative represents a pivotal move toward sustainable air travel. If successful, the ATR 72-600 demonstrator will transform the regional aircraft sector, hastening the industry’s shift to a more sustainable trajectory.
