Air Niugini Welcomes First Airbus A220 Aircraft
Papua New Guinea’s national airline, Air Niugini, has received its first Airbus A220 single-aisle aircraft from the European original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The aircraft, an A220-300 model, marks the beginning of a new fleet for the airline with financing provided by leasing specialist Azorra. Air Niugini has plans to expand this fleet with orders for three A220-300s and eight of the smaller A220-100s, all financed by Azorra.
Special Livery to Celebrate Milestone
The newly delivered A220-300, named “Peoples Balus,” features a special livery commemorating Papua New Guinea’s 50th anniversary of independence. The intricate design required the efforts of a team of 120 individuals to complete. This aircraft arrived at Port Moresby after its assembly at Airbus’s Final Assembly Line (FAL) located in Mirabel, Canada.
Advanced Engine Technology
Equipped with Pratt & Whitney’s cutting-edge GTF engines, the A220 offers a 25% reduction in carbon emissions per seat compared to prior-generation aircraft. Additionally, like all aircraft manufactured by Airbus, the A220 is currently capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims to enhance this capability to 100% SAF operation by the year 2030.
