Air Niugini has introduced its inaugural Airbus A220 with a special commemorative livery, known as the “People’s Balus,” in celebration of Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

    A Canvas of National Pride

The aircraft, painted at the Airbus facility in Mirabel, Canada, features a vibrant design created by 120 painters utilizing advanced airbrushing with stencil overlay techniques. The process involved 11 distinct colors and was executed continuously over three shifts. This specific technique has been applied only once before on an A220 aircraft.

According to Acting CEO Capt. Samiu Taufa, MBE, “This aircraft is more than just a new addition to our fleet — it is our first brand-new, next-generation jet aircraft and captures the spirit of our nation and our aspirations for the future…”

    Fleet Modernization Milestone

The unveiling of the “People’s Balus” signifies the commencement of Air Niugini’s fleet modernization initiative. The airline aims to phase out its older Fokker models, as well as its Boeing 737 aircraft, in an effort to enhance connectivity and reliability within Papua New Guinea and beyond. Air Niugini has placed an order for a total of 11 Airbus A220s, expecting delivery of three by the end of the year and the rest within three years.

After registering with PNG CASA, the aircraft will transition from its Canadian test registration (C-FOWU) to PNG registration P2-PGA before flying to Port Moresby. The “People’s Balus” is expected to arrive in September to coincide with the nation’s golden jubilee celebration.
