Air Niugini Expands Fleet with Airbus A220-300

Papua New Guinea‘s flag carrier, Air Niugini, has officially integrated the Airbus A220-300 into its fleet, becoming the 25th operator of this aircraft model. This milestone coincides with the country’s 50th anniversary of independence from Australia, highlighting a significant moment in its aviation history. The new aircraft, set to arrive on September 15, will carry the nickname ‘Peoples Balus’.

    Fleet Modernization and Enhanced Capabilities

The Airbus A220-300 introduces a new era for Air Niugini as it replaces older Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 aircraft. This model is recognized for its efficiency, comfort, and performance, offering improved fuel economy and increased range. These features suit Papua New Guinea’s challenging terrain and aim to provide passengers with a quieter cabin and added route options.

    • Existing Fleet: Fokker 70 and 100
    • New Aircraft: 1 A220-300, 8 A220-100 on order
    • Seating: Fokker 70 (73 passengers), Fokker 100 (101 passengers)

Captain Samiu Tagua, Acting Chief Operating Officer at Air Niugini, stated, “This is more than just the arrival of a new aircraft—it is the dawn of a new era for Air Niugini and Papua New Guinea. The A220 represents our commitment to safety, reliability, and service excellence, while proudly carrying our flag into the future.”

    Delivery Flight Itinerary

According to Flightradar24 data, the Airbus A220-300, with registration P2-PGA (serial number 55388), embarked on its delivery route from Montréal-Mirabel Airport (YMX) as flight PX50. The aircraft departed 54 minutes late and landed in Vancouver International Airport (YVR) five hours later. The next segment began after an overnight stop, departing YVR 55 minutes behind schedule for Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), arriving after a nearly six-hour flight. After a brief refueling stop, the aircraft continued to Nadi International Airport in Fiji, and from there it will complete its journey to Port Moresby International (Jacksons) Airport (POM).
