Air Canada Introduces First Airbus A321XLR Route

    New Route Announcement

Canadian flag carrier Air Canada has announced the launch of a new nonstop route from Montréal (YUL) to Palma de Mallorca (PMI) with the debut of its Airbus A321XLR aircraft starting June 2026. This will mark Air Canada as the first Canadian airline to offer direct flights to Mallorca.

    Aircraft Introduction and Ticket Availability

The Airbus A321XLR fleet is scheduled for initial deliveries in early 2026. Tickets for the new Montréal–Mallorca route are already available on Air Canada’s website and through travel agents, providing passengers with the opportunity to secure reservations in advance.

Palma de Mallorca has been strategically chosen for the A321XLR’s extended range capabilities, allowing Air Canada to reach niche markets that lack direct services. The island is a popular European destination known for its appealing beaches and cultural attractions. The new aircraft enables the airline to connect Montréal with destinations previously out of reach for narrow-body planes.

    The Aircraft and Onboard Experience

    • The A321XLR will debut as the first narrow-body aircraft in Air Canada’s fleet to feature lie-flat seats in Signature Class.
    • The aircraft has a total seating capacity of 182 passengers, including 14 Signature Class and 168 Economy Class seats.
    • Passengers can expect a premium, wide-body style onboard experience with updated design standards.

    Expansion Plans

In addition to serving Mallorca, Air Canada plans to gradually transition existing transatlantic routes to the A321XLR. Upcoming routes include:

    • Montréal (YUL) – Toulouse (TLS): Year-round flights connecting two French-speaking cities.
    • Montréal (YUL) – Edinburgh (EDI): Seasonal operations restarting in 2026 with enhanced onboard services.

Further expansions will include Toronto (YYZ), Ottawa (YOW), and Halifax (YHZ), utilizing the A321XLR for mid-size international markets.

    Fleet Delivery Timeline

Air Canada anticipates the delivery of 30 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, with the first unit arriving in early 2026, followed by ten additional units later that year via Air Lease Corporation. This acquisition underlines Air Canada’s strategy to open new transatlantic routes and elevate passenger experience.

    Exploring Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, the vibrant capital of the Balearic Islands, is celebrated for its historic sites and Mediterranean allure. Visitors arriving at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) find immediate access to the city’s cultural and culinary offerings.

Key airlines such as Iberia, Ryanair, and Vueling provide connections to major European cities, but Air Canada’s entry brings a fresh transatlantic link. The city offers a blend of Gothic structures, bustling markets, and coastal charm.

    When to Visit and Transportation

Palma welcomes visitors all year, ideal visitation periods being spring and autumn. These seasons offer favorable weather and fewer tourists. The city is walkable, and public transport, including taxis and buses, facilitates easy navigation, with car rentals recommended for longer excursions.

Where to Stay and Eat in Palma

    • Hotels: Hotel Antigua Palma and Sant Francesc Singular offer central locations with top-tier amenities.
    • Dining: Options like Mercat de l’Olivar, Can Joan de S’Aigo, and Ombu Tapas provide varied culinary experiences.

    Things to Do in Palma

Explore Palma’s rich history, arts scene, and vibrant culture through visits to the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, the Old Town, and various artisan stores, parks, and museums. Day trips to nearby mountain villages and eastern coastal towns are recommended.
