Air Astana Delays U.S. Flights Due to Boeing 787 Delivery Issues

Plans by Air Astana to initiate a new flight route connecting Kazakhstan to the United States, initially targeted for launch in 2025, have been delayed following setbacks in Boeing 787 aircraft deliveries. Discussions concerning this new route, linking Kazakhstan’s capital with the U.S., have now resumed.

Constraints on Non-Stop Flights to the U.S.

Speaking during a presentation at the London Stock Exchange on September 15, 2025, Air Astana CEO Peter Foster revealed that the airline can only operate the planned route with a layover in Europe. The necessity arises from Air Astana’s policy to avoid Russian airspace since March 2022 due to geopolitical tensions initiated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As initially reported by ch-aviation, bypassing Russian territories makes a non-stop route unfeasible even with the anticipated Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

Potential Route via Europe to JFK

As the Air Astana team strategizes U.S. destinations, it is evident that demand is highest on the East Coast of the United States, making New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) an ideal target. However, lacking Russian airspace access necessitates considering a European stop. Such a strategy would require obtaining fifth-freedom rights at an undisclosed European airport, a complex process according to CEO Peter Foster.

“Even with the 787’s range, we can’t operate a direct flight from Kazakhstan to New York JFK without overflying Russia. So, if we serve the U.S., it would have to be through a midpoint,” Foster stated.

Overview of Air Astana’s Current Fleet

Established in 2001, Air Astana stands as the national airline of Kazakhstan, operating from Astana Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ). Presently, Air Astana’s fleet comprises 33 aircraft with an average age of roughly eight years. The majority of the fleet includes Airbus models.

    • 12 Airbus A321LRs
    • 11 Airbus A320neos
    • 4 Airbus A321neos
    • 3 Airbus A321-200s
    • 3 Boeing 767-300ER widebody aircraft

The airline is also anticipating the delivery of 13 additional aircraft, which includes seven A321LRs, three Boeing 787-9s, and three Boeing 787-8 widebody aircraft. Owing to Dreamliner delivery delays, Air Astana anticipates receiving its first Boeing 787-9 only by mid-2026, further postponing plans for U.S. services.

    Government Involvement and Future Prospects

On January 23, 2024, the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan conveyed that the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan (AAK) is in collaboration with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aimed at establishing direct flights to the U.S. Further meetings in July 2024 between Kazakhstan’s government officials and Boeing representatives addressed the production and delivery deferments, noting that direct flights could be further delayed beyond initial expectations.
