Adeyemi Begins Second Term as Secretary General
Ms. Adefunke Adeyemi has commenced her second three-year term as the Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), which extends until 31 August 2028. Initially appointed in September 2022 and reappointed in November 2024, her leadership has been reaffirmed due to the confidence expressed by the Commission’s Bureau and African Union member states in her “strategic vision, leadership, and performance” during her previous term.

According to AFCAC, her prior tenure brought significant advancements in several key areas:
- Safety Oversight
- Security Compliance
- Capacity Development
- Operationalization of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM)
The Commission anticipates that her second term will bolster its position as a central voice for African aviation and a key player in achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063 goals for integration and sustainable development.
Alemayehu Appointed Director of Air Transport
Mr. Getachew Mengistie Alemayehu has been appointed as AFCAC’s new Director of Air Transport, succeeding Ms. Angeline Simana. Prior to this role, Mr. Alemayehu was the Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority. His appointment follows what AFCAC describes as a “rigorous and highly competitive recruitment process.”
AFCAC highlights Mr. Alemayehu’s extensive experience of over two decades in aviation and transport. His achievements include implementing sector reforms in Ethiopia, initiating national aviation development programs, and representing Ethiopia at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
His strategic approach is said to align with AFCAC’s mission to promote a unified, liberalized, and secure African airspace under the SAATM initiative.
