    Introduction

The European Commission is expanding its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) initiatives beyond European borders through its Global Gateway initiative, with a focus on advancing SAF financing solutions in African countries. This endeavor supports the EU Green Deal and the international aviation industry’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

    High-Level Meeting on SAF Financing

On September 8, 2025, a high-level meeting orchestrated by the European Commission and the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) took place to address the financial challenges inhibiting SAF and alternative clean energy development in Africa. Key stakeholders included representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the African Union, as well as major financial bodies such as the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank.

    Commitment from Financial Institutions

The meeting’s financial institution participants demonstrated a strong commitment to jointly fund the production of SAF and cleaner energy options in Africa, recognizing the importance of these solutions for both environmental sustainability and economic development.

    EU-Africa Partnership Enhancements

This initiative further strengthens the collaboration between the European Union and the African Union, setting the stage for heightened cooperation ahead of the EU–AU Summit slated for November 2025.

    Official Statements

Magda Kopczyńska, Director-General for Mobility and Transport, affirmed the EU’s dedication to building partnerships that foster sustainable development in aviation and contribute to the socio-economic advancement of partner countries. She highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance global SAF production, in sync with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s “No Country Left Behind” initiative.
