KLM Cancels Over 100 Flights Due to Ground Crew Strike

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced the cancellation of more than 100 flights scheduled for Wednesday as a result of a ground crew strike at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Approximately 27,000 passengers have been impacted, according to a spokesperson from KLM.

Strike Led by Unions FNV and CNV

The strike, initiated by unions FNV and CNV, is scheduled to last for two hours on Wednesday morning. Ground staff, including baggage handlers, towing operators, and passenger service agents, are demanding improved terms in a new collective labor agreement.

    Importance of Ground Staff

Ground staff are essential for maintaining smooth airport operations. Their absence has necessitated the cancellation of numerous flights, highlighting their critical role in daily airport activities.

    Negotiations and Unions’ Positions

Negotiations for a new labor agreement have been ongoing for several months. While KLM reached an agreement with three unions—VKP, De Unie, and NVLT—unions FNV and CNV rejected it, claiming the proposed 2.25% wage increase until 2026 falls short of inflation rates.

    Union Criticism and Future Actions

    • FNV’s John van Dorland labeled KLM’s decision to move forward without the largest unions as “a declaration of war”.
    • CNV’s Souleiman Amallah criticized the deal as insufficient, indicating further strikes are planned.

    Defense of the Agreement

Supporting unions, including VKP, De Unie, and NVLT, argue the agreement is balanced given KLM’s financial pressures. De Unie’s Reinier Castelein dismissed claims of a “declaration of war,” urging renewed constructive talks.

    Context of Ongoing Labor Disputes

This conflict follows several labor disputes within KLM over recent years. Earlier this year, agreements were also reached with KLM pilots, illustrating persisting divisions among the workforce.

Impacts on Travelers and Airport Operations

The cancellations have caused significant delays and re-bookings for passengers at Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest. KLM advises checking flight status before traveling and notes that further disturbances may occur if the dispute continues unresolved.
