Severe Weather Forces Diversion of Lufthansa Flights

On September 2, 2025, two Lufthansa flights destined for Munich were compelled to alter their routes due to severe thunderstorms affecting central Europe. The adverse weather conditions caused significant disruptions in air traffic, leading to several in-flight diversions.

    Affected Flights

    The flights impacted included:

    • LH1817: Operating from Barcelona to Munich with an Airbus A320 (registration D-AIWB)
    • LH2455: Operating from Oslo to Munich with an Airbus A321 (registration D-AIDW)

Both aircraft altered their original paths upon encountering intense cumulonimbus cloud formations, commonly referred to as “intense clustered cumulonimbus” (CB) by meteorologists.

    Weather Developments

The storm systems, with cloud tops reaching between FL340 and FL380, heavily affected eastern France and Switzerland. As the storm moves east-northeast, it approaches southwestern Germany and northwestern Italy. The associated strong winds pose increased risks for flights attempting to reach southern Germany.

Additional isolated thunderstorms were reported across the UK and Benelux regions, with cloud formations ranging from FL280 to FL340. Meanwhile, storm activity weakened across Slovakia, Romania, and Serbia. A separate CB cluster over Greece and Albania, with tops between FL320 and FL360, is also expected to diminish later in the evening.

    Response and Safety

Though Lufthansa has not issued a formal statement regarding the diversions, both aircraft landed safely at alternative airports. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.

Air traffic controllers continue to closely observe the storm’s trajectory, maintaining warnings of persisting CB risks as the weather front advances further into Germany. Passengers traveling within the region should prepare for potential delays and further diversions.
