U.S. Air Force Highlights New 2028 First Flight Timeline for F-47 Fighter Jet

The United States Air Force has announced an accelerated timeline for the inaugural flight of its F-47 fighter jet, now set for 2028. Previously, this milestone was projected for January 2029. This update was disclosed by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference.

Keynote Address by Gen. David Allvin

Gen. Allvin emphasized the urgency of the program’s progress, underscoring the commencement of the first prototype’s manufacturing. He reported that the Air Force is committed to ensuring the first F-47 takes to the skies by 2028, as part of their efforts to secure air superiority in an era of rapid technological advancement.

    Technical Advantages of the F-47

Although specific details about the F-47 remain limited, available documents reveal that the aircraft is expected to feature a combat radius of over 1,000 nautical miles and exceed speeds of Mach 2. This is a significant advancement compared to existing fighter jets:

    • The F-22 Raptor, which reaches speeds of Mach 2 with a combat radius of 590 miles.
    • The F-35 Lightning II, which achieves Mach 1.6 and a 670-mile combat radius.

The F-47 is also being designed with “stealth++” capabilities, anticipated to offer superior radar evasion compared to today’s advanced fighters.

    Implications for Future Air Dominance

Defense analysts suggest that the revised timeline signifies the Air Force’s proactive strategy to maintain air dominance amidst technological competition. The F-47 is expected to influence air combat throughout the 21st century, offering greater reach, speed, and enhanced survivability.

    Program Advancements

With production in progress and the flight test date now set for 2028, the F-47 program represents a crucial step in redefining airpower. It is anticipated to complement, and eventually replace, today’s leading fighter jets while setting new standards in range, speed, and stealth capabilities.
