Flydubai Launches Direct Flights from Dubai to Iași

Flydubai (FZ) has officially commenced direct flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Iași International Airport (IAS), marking the first operation of this route by a United Arab Emirates-based airline. With this twice-weekly service, Flydubai extends its Romanian network to include Iași alongside Bucharest (OTP), increasing its Bucharest flights to triple-daily service. This brings the total weekly flights between the UAE and Romania to 21.

    Initial Flight and Significance

The inaugural flight to Iași was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute and was welcomed by airport authorities, government officials, and media representatives. This new connection enhances accessibility between Romania’s cultural center and Dubai, a significant global hub. Jeyhun Efendi, Flydubai’s Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations and E-commerce, highlighted that passenger numbers have grown by 16% annual average since the airline began Bucharest services in 2012. The opening of Iași broadens traveler options to Romania’s business and cultural realms.

    Regional Impact

Romeo Vatră, General Manager of Iași International Airport (IAS), emphasized the essential nature of this route, noting that Iași is now the sole airport in Moldova with direct UAE connections. He expressed enthusiasm for the Flydubai partnership, which will advantage both travelers and the regional economy by establishing Iași as a key international entry point.

    Destination Highlights

    • The Palace of Culture with multiple museums
    • The Italian-Renaissance style Metropolitan Cathedral
    • Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre, Romania’s oldest theater

These sites strengthen Iași’s reputation as Romania’s cultural nucleus, providing tourists and business travelers easy access.

    Flydubai’s European Expansion

The Iași service is part of Flydubai’s Europe-wide expansion strategy. In September, services to Chișinău, Moldova were introduced, with Vilnius, Lithuania and Riga, Latvia planned by December, expanding Flydubai’s reach in Eastern and Northern Europe.

    Flight Schedule and Fares

Flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) Terminal 2 to Iași International Airport (IAS) operate on Tuesdays and Fridays. Emirates (EK) will codeshare, offering broader connections through Dubai’s hub.

Economy Class fares start at AED 1,600, and Business Class fares start at AED 8,000 for DXB-IAS routes. Iași return fares begin at EUR 380 for Economy Class Lite and EUR 2,000 for Business Class.

    Exploring Iași: Romania’s Cultural Capital

Iași, a lesser-known yet captivating Romanian city, offers a rich blend of culture and history and serves as an affordable entry point to Romania. As the nation’s second-largest city, Iași pioneered education and culture, housing Romania’s oldest university and national theater. Architecture in Iași reflects its layered history through medieval, neoclassical, baroque, and communist styles. The city’s vibrant atmosphere is marked by cafes, parks, and cultural venues.

    Architectural Attractions

    • Palace of Culture: Neo-Gothic architectural masterpiece, houses four museums
    • Saint Nicholas Church: Oldest religious structure, showcases medieval architecture
    • Three Holy Hierarchs Monastery: Known for intricate carvings and frescoes
    • Metropolitan Cathedral: Romania’s largest Orthodox church

    Parks and Green Spaces

    • Copou Park: Established in 1834, perfect for leisurely walks
    • Botanical Garden: Romania’s largest, featuring rose gardens and tropical greenhouses

    Additional Travel Information

Day trips include the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina, a UNESCO site, and a visit to Chișinău, Moldova’s capital. Iași offers authentic Romanian cuisine, such as Mămăligă, Mici, and Plăcinte. Access to Iași is facilitated by air travel, train, and buses. Ideal visiting times include spring and autumn due to temperate climate conditions.
