System Failure at Dallas Fort Worth Airport Causes Ground Stops

A radar and communications system failure at Dallas TRACON led to ground stops at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field Airport. This equipment malfunction, starting midday Friday, rendered air traffic controllers in the Dallas area unable to manage flights, resulting in immediate ground stops for departures and substantial delays for arrivals. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the extensive impact of the technical issue at the Terminal Radar Approach Control facility, which oversees all flights in and out of the Dallas metropolitan region.

    Communication Breakdown

An air traffic controller at the Dallas Love Field tower, captured in audio from LiveATC.net, stated, “We’ve lost all radar and phone communications. I’m not departing anybody until we can get a system setup. We have no coms with approach right now.”

    FAA Announcement

The FAA stated, “The FAA is slowing flights into Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport due to a reported equipment issue at Dallas TRACON.” The failure of this facility, responsible for all flights departing and arriving at both airports, has significant implications for regional air traffic management.

    Travel Disruptions and Passenger Reports

As reported by @airlivenet via Bruce H Varner on Twitter, passengers are experiencing significant delays. “Sitting at gate can’t takeoff due to problem with traffic control radar not sure how long delay but they say DFW airport is completely shut down nothing in or out may be stuck on this plane for a while.”

    Increasing Delays

By 2 p.m. CT, DFW experienced 273 flight delays, while Love Field recorded 69. These numbers continued to rise as the outage’s effects spread throughout the national airspace system. The FAA reported that these disruptions might persist for several hours, possibly extending past 5 p.m. Travelers are urged to remain updated by checking with their airlines as the situation evolves.
