Air Canada Ends Vancouver to Dubai Route

Despite launching in October 2023, Air Canada has decided to halt its flights from Vancouver to Dubai, known as one of the world’s busiest airports for long-haul traffic. This decision, first highlighted by Aeroroutes, was confirmed through checks on the airline’s website and other booking engines. While Air Canada has been approached for comments, no official statement has been received yet.

    Implications and Future Possibilities

The Vancouver-Dubai connection was partly to support Emirates’ operations. However, with limited traffic rights, the future of such routes remains uncertain. If the Montreal route is stopped or Toronto flights are reduced, there may be room for Emirates to operate from Vancouver. Additionally, Air Canada might use the vacated traffic rights to enhance its Toronto-Dubai service. Potential adjustments in Emirates flights could allow for new routes to Vancouver.

    Details of the Route

Air Canada’s pursuit of a connection to Dubai marked Vancouver’s first passenger service to the Middle East. The service was seasonal, operating primarily in winter. The route’s final departure from British Columbia occurred on March 27, 2025. Scheduled operations were planned between November 22 and March 26, 2026, utilizing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, configured with 298 seats divided across business, premium economy, and economy classes.

    • Business: 30 seats, fully flat beds
    • Premium Economy: 21 seats, 2-3-2 configuration, 38″ pitch
    • Economy: 247 seats, 3-3-3 configuration, 31″ pitch

The route was pegged to be Air Canada’s fourth-longest from Vancouver, only shorter than routes to Singapore, Bangkok, and Sydney. It also ranked as the sixth-longest nonstop flight in the airline’s overall network.

    Strategic Alliance with Emirates

The route supported a strategic partnership with Emirates that began in 2022, incorporating a codeshare agreement. This allowed seamless booking across both airlines and included benefits like reciprocal lounge access and mileage accrual. The collaboration also facilitated Emirates’ expansion in the restrictive Canadian market.

    Passenger Flow and Traffic Data

Booking statistics for winter 2024/2025 reveal that travelers from Vancouver were mainly heading to countries like India, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka via Dubai. Top cities among these destinations included Tehran, Delhi, Karachi, Hyderabad, and Kochi. Nevertheless, only a small fraction of travelers opted to transit through Dubai, favoring other hubs like Hong Kong, London Heathrow, Delhi, and Istanbul instead. The limited frequency and seasonal nature of the flights were factors in this trend.
