Noida International Airport Scheduled for October Launch
Asia’s largest airport, Noida International Airport (DXN) in Jewar, is slated for inauguration on October 30, with commercial operations projected to commence within 45 days, as announced by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu. This new development will add a significant aviation hub to the National Capital Region alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).
Initial Connectivity and Airline Commitments
Speaking at the Yatri Sewa Diwas event at Hindon Airport (HDO) in Ghaziabad, Naidu emphasized the efforts to ensure operational readiness. Airlines like IndiGo (6E) and Akasa Air (QP) have already committed to initiate operations from the airport, considering routes to cities such as Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU).
Airport Infrastructure and Expansion
The Jewar project spans 1,334 hectares, with development proceeding in phases. The first phase features a single 3,900-meter runway and a terminal capable of handling 12 million passengers annually. Ultimately, the plan includes four phases to accommodate up to 70 million passengers each year.
Officials anticipate serving approximately six million passengers in the inaugural year. Core infrastructure components, including the runway, ATC tower, terminal structure, aerobridges, baggage handling systems, and e-gates, are nearly complete. Interior work, such as seating, lighting, and gallery installations, is nearly finished. Obtaining a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) license remains the final critical step before flight operations commence.
Operational Readiness and Transition
Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), the airport concessionaire, confirmed that both finishing touches and technical installations are progressing. Operational Readiness and Transition (ORAT) trials, which encompass simulations, baggage system testing, and ground handler familiarization, are underway.
Airline Operations and Route Expansion
Airlines are making strides to establish operations at Jewar. IndiGo (6E) signed an MoU in November 2023 to become the launch carrier, supported by a successful validation flight in December. Akasa Air (QP), operational since 2022, also aims to build a strong presence.
The initial routes will link Jewar with major domestic hubs, including Mumbai (BOM), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU). With at least 10 cities connected in the first phase, the network will gradually expand as infrastructure and demand grow.
Cargo and Strategic Development
Beyond passenger services, the airport is positioned to become a major cargo hub for northern India. Its strategic location near the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Dedicated Freight Corridor enhances its logistical potential, marking Jewar as a crucial component in India’s growing air cargo ecosystem.
Passenger Experience Improvements
Minister Naidu announced upcoming nationwide upgrades for Indian airports. Within two months, free WiFi will be available at all airports, while libraries and dedicated children’s zones will be added within three months to improve the passenger experience.
Hindon Airport Expansion
At the same event, Naidu highlighted developments at Hindon Airport (HDO), which has grown to connect 16 cities since its commercial introduction in October 2019. Current destinations include Kolkata (CCU), Chennai (MAA), Goa (GOI), Bengaluru (BLR), and Jammu (IXJ). However, the limited terminal facilities lead to saturation, prompting the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to request nine additional hectares from the Uttar Pradesh government to expand terminal capacity and aircraft parking bays.
