Delta Air Lines Introduces New Routes to Malta and Olbia
Delta Air Lines has announced new flights from New York’s JFK Airport to Malta and Olbia (Sardinia, Italy), with plans to leverage various incentives and risk-sharing mechanisms. This move aligns with the growing trend of Southern European travel. Earlier this year, Delta revealed that employees and SkyMiles members were involved in selecting the next destinations. However, the extent of their influence remains unclear.
Route Details: Aircraft and Schedule
The new routes will utilize the Boeing 767-300ER. Delta Airlines made this aircraft available after ceasing flights to London Gatwick and JFK-Brussels, consolidating those services to JFK-Heathrow and Atlanta-Brussels.
Delta Flights from JFK to Malta
Scheduled to commence on June 7, 2026, Delta will become the first U.S. airline to serve Malta’s Luqa Airport. This will be the third instance of Malta hosting flights from the U.S., following past operations by Air Malta and Balkan Bulgarian Airlines.
OAG booking data indicates that, in the year ending July 2025, over 90,000 passengers traveled between Malta and North America, with New York City as the largest market. Delta plans to offer three flights per week with the 216-seat 767-300ER, featuring a configuration that includes Delta One, Premium Select, Comfort+, and Main Cabin.

Delta Flights from JFK to Olbia
The introduction of services to Olbia is significant given that, unlike Malta, Olbia and the region of Sardinia have never previously connected directly with U.S. flights. Data shows approximately 65,000 passengers traveled between Sardinia and North America last year, with a major portion associated with New York.
Starting on May 20, 2026, Delta will operate four times weekly to Olbia using the same Boeing 767-300ER configuration. Sardinia is known for high-yield travel, with average fares noted at $1,720 per direction, including fuel surcharges.

Broader Trends in Airline Route Development
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, airlines such as United Airlines have shown increased creativity in their route choices, launching flights to various European destinations. Delta’s new routes to Malta and Olbia reflect this strategic expansion in the leisure market, albeit with a more conservative approach by not frequently utilizing single-aisle aircraft for transatlantic flights. Delta’s recent routes include Naples and Catania.
