Delta Air Lines Expands with New Nonstop Flights to Sardinia and Malta

Delta Air Lines will introduce nonstop services to Sardinia (OLB) and Malta (MLA) from New York-JFK starting in summer 2026. This marks the airline’s inaugural nonstop routes to these Mediterranean destinations.

    New Destination Selection Process

In a first for Delta, the selection of new European destinations was determined through a vote by SkyMiles Members and Delta employees. Sardinia was the top choice among members, while Malta led the employee poll. Consequently, Delta decided to incorporate both destinations into its transatlantic network.

    Delta’s Route Expansion

The voting event, named “Route Race,” garnered nearly 150,000 participants over five days, choosing between Sardinia, Malta, and Ibiza. Both Sardinia and Malta were selected as destinations, reflecting Delta’s dedication to both its customer and employee communities, while enhancing the airline’s Mediterranean presence.

    Sardinia: A Unique Mediterranean Experience

Sardinia, renowned for its Blue Zone status, is a region celebrated for its scenic landscape and the longevity of its inhabitants. Visitors can enjoy diverse attractions including ancient ruins and a vibrant culinary scene. Delta’s new direct flights will provide easier access to the island’s cultural and natural heritage.

    Malta’s Historic Transatlantic Link

Delta’s new service to Malta signifies the island’s first nonstop transatlantic connection offered by a U.S. airline. Malta is known for its historical landmarks and vibrant cultural events. This new route is anticipated to enhance leisure and business travel, supporting Malta’s tourism strategies and fostering cultural exchange.

    Service Details

    • Sardinia Service: Starts May 20, 2026, operating four times weekly.
    • Malta Service: Begins June 7, 2026, with three weekly flights.

    Onboard Experience

Both routes will utilize Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, offering four cabin options: Delta One®, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort, and Main Cabin. Features include lie-flat seating in Delta One®, regionally inspired meals, Missoni-designed amenities, and complimentary Wi-Fi for SkyMiles Members, enhancing the overall passenger experience.

    Extension of Delta’s European Network

With existing services to Italian cities like Rome and Milan, Delta is the leading U.S. airline in Italy. The addition of Sardinia and Malta strengthens its transatlantic connections, aligning with its network growth strategy. Delta’s expansion highlights its leadership in connecting the U.S. with Mediterranean locales.

    Executive Insights

Silvio Pippobello, CEO of Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, and Allan Borg, CEO of Malta International Airport, recognized the significance of these routes for their respective regions. These developments are seen as pivotal for enhancing tourism and economic growth.
