Air India Cancels Plans for Dallas-Delhi Nonstop Flight

Air India (AI) has canceled its planned nonstop route from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi. The airline’s 2025 schedule no longer includes this service, initially approved by regulators in late 2024.

Route Cancellation and Fleet Retrofit Program

The cancellation aligns with Air India’s ongoing aircraft retrofit program, which temporarily grounds long-haul aircraft for updates. The North Texas community, including local leaders and the Indian diaspora, had looked forward to this route for enhanced connectivity.

In October 2024, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation approved the Dallas-Delhi route, allowing operations to start by December 1 of that year. Industry experts had anticipated a launch in 2025, considering necessary preparations.

    • The route would have connected a major Texas hub directly to Delhi.
    • It was expected to serve both business travelers and the growing Indian community in North Texas.

Air India Removes Dallas from Schedule

Air India did not publicly announce the schedule change or provide a statement. The cancellation is reportedly linked to the airline’s current focus on retrofitting its long-haul fleet, prioritizing existing operations during this transition.

The retrofit, impacting aircraft such as Boeing 777s and 787s, began in 2024 and will continue through 2025. This process similarly affected flights to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). While there is no indication of demand or regulatory issues, the lack of fleet capacity seems to be the key factor.

    Air India’s North American Operations

Currently, Air India offers nonstop flights from its Delhi hub to several North American destinations, including:

    • New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
    • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
    • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
    • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
    • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
    • Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

The network prioritizes East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest entry points in high-demand markets. The addition of the Dallas route was intended to expand access to the Southwest US, but current priorities have put expansion plans on hold.

    Community Impact in North Texas

WFAA-TV in Dallas reported strong community support for the proposed route due to North Texas’s large Indian population, which exceeds 300,000 residents, many of whom work in the tech and business sectors.

A direct flight was expected to reduce travel time and costs, enhancing family visits and trade between Texas and India. Local leaders had anticipated significant economic benefits, projecting increased passenger traffic.

Absent the direct Dallas-Delhi connection, travelers must use connecting flights through hubs like Chicago O’Hare (ORD) or New York JFK. This situation prolongs travel duration, prompting watchful anticipation for future announcements once Air India’s fleet updates stabilize.

    Prospects for Future Expansion

After the retrofit, Air India intends to expand its international network, potentially adding more US cities by late 2025 or 2026. Its transformation plan, Vihaan.AI, aims to double both its fleet and route offerings.

Regulators might reconsider the Dallas route approval if future capacity permits. As other successful routes demonstrate, strong demand, particularly linked to Texas’s economic ties with India in sectors like energy and technology, may justify future reconsideration, though no specific timeline is set.
