IndiGo Airlines A321XLR Launches Direct Route to Athens

IndiGo Airlines, headquartered in Gurugram, will operate its first Airbus A321XLR on the Athens (ATH) route starting January 2026. This marks India’s debut with the Airbus A321XLR, a long-range narrow-body jet scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025.

    IndiGo’s International Expansion

Earlier announced commitments had IndiGo planning to extend its services to 10 new international destinations this financial year. With the launch of the Athens route, IndiGo becomes the only Indian carrier offering direct flights from Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) to Greece, pending regulatory approvals.

    • Frequency: Six times weekly, split between Delhi–Athens and Mumbai–Athens.
    • Direct Flights: Establishes a direct India–Greece corridor, beneficial for both leisure and business travelers.

    Features of the Airbus A321XLR

The Airbus A321XLR has a maximum range of 8,700 km, allowing for long-haul flights with the fuel efficiency typical of a single-aisle jet. This enables airlines like IndiGo to explore new European destinations that were previously inaccessible with narrow-body aircraft.

The aircraft will be delivered to IndiGo by late 2025, featuring a two-class configuration: Economy and IndiGoStretch, a premium cabin. This layout appeals to both budget travelers and those seeking more comfort on longer flights. The A321XLR’s range ensures efficient nonstop travel from India to Southern Europe.

Strategic Importance of the Athens Route

CEO Pieter Elbers emphasized the significance of the new Athens flight. These direct India–Greece flights align with the airline’s global growth strategy, addressing the rising demand for international connectivity. This route also provides potential connections to popular Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete, along with other European hubs.

For Indian travelers, this development reduces dependence on connecting flights through other regional hubs.

    IndiGo’s Expanding Network

    • Operations: Over 2,200 daily flights to more than 90 domestic and 40 international locations.
    • Fleet: As of September 2025, IndiGo maintained a fleet of 400 aircraft, with 349 active and 51 grounded (source: Planespotter.com).

By choosing Athens as the inaugural destination for its A321XLR, IndiGo strengthens its position in Europe amidst increasing travel demand between India and Europe.

    Exploring Athens

Athens is a blend of ancient heritage and modern vibrancy. The Acropolis and Parthenon embody its historical allure, but the city’s energy pulses through its modern scenes, from rooftop bars to dynamic neighborhoods.

Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), is the main entry point. The metro connects travelers to central stops, with Athens being largely walkable.

    Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather, making these the best seasons to visit. Summers see increased tourist numbers, whereas winters promise fewer crowds and lower hotel rates.
