Delta Introduces Daily Flights from Austin to Miami
Delta Air Lines is set to introduce a new route between Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Miami International Airport (MIA) starting November 22. This service marks Delta’s latest expansion in Austin, increasing its destinations from the Central Texas airport to nearly 30.
Competitive Route Dynamics
The new route will face stiff competition from American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, all of which currently serve this pairing. Delta plans to operate daily flights on this route using its Boeing 737-800 fleet.
Delta’s Strategic Growth
With this move, Delta aims to capitalize on growth opportunities in Austin, where it has seen a 12% increase in passenger traffic year-over-year. In contrast, American Airlines has experienced a 16% decline in the same period.
American Airlines remains the third-largest carrier in Austin, offering up to three daily flights to Miami. In response to Delta’s expansion, American plans to operate up to four daily frequencies using a combination of Boeing 737 and Airbus A319 aircraft.
New Destinations and Expanded Services
Delta’s expansion in Austin does not stop with Miami. The airline recently announced new nonstop flights to three additional destinations:
| Destination | Begins | Aircraft | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami (MIA) | November 22, 2025 | Boeing 737-800 | Daily |
| Denver (DEN) | November 9, 2025 | Embraer E175 | Twice daily |
| Columbus (CMH) | June 7, 2026 | Embraer E175 | Daily |
| Kansas City (MCI) | June 7, 2026 | Embraer E175 | Twice daily |
Additional routes launching soon include flights to Palm Springs, as well as Delta’s first international services from Austin to Cancun and Cabo San Lucas. The airline also plans to increase frequencies on existing routes to San Francisco and Indianapolis.
Austin-Bergstrom Airport Expansion
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is preparing for a substantial capacity expansion as part of a $4 billion plan. This initiative includes developing Concourse B, which will initially add 20 gates, with the potential to grow to 40 gates. This expansion will increase the airport’s capacity from 15 million to 30 million passengers annually.
Delta has expressed interest in obtaining 15 preferred gates and establishing two lounges in the new concourse, with ambitions to operate up to 150 daily flights by 2031. In line with these goals, Delta plans to expand its local workforce from a few hundred to approximately 2,800 employees.
Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines, which currently holds about 40% of the market at Austin-Bergstrom, aims to expand its operations to more than 200 flights, further solidifying its presence at the airport.
