Delta Airlines Takes Action Against Employees Over Social Media Posts

Delta Air Lines (DL) has suspended several pilots and other employees after they posted on social media about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. This incident has had wide-reaching effects across the United States, influencing both political discussions and the daily operations of many Americans’ work lives.

    Strict Social Media Policies Enforced

Delta Air Lines has maintained a firm policy since 2018, prohibiting employees from sharing insensitive or offensive content. This policy is under criticism from unions for potentially restricting lawful activities due to its broad definitions.

The company underscores its commitment to being a values-led organization where employees are expected to uphold brand values both on-duty and during their personal time online. When conduct does not align with the values of professionalism, inclusion, and respect, it results in disciplinary action or termination.

An internal memo, leaked by aviation insider xJonNYC, outlined the recent enforcement actions:

    • Delta employees were identified as having social media activity concerning Charlie Kirk’s murder that exceeded respectful debate.
    • Posts were flagged for violating Delta’s social media policy, leading to suspensions pending further investigation.
    • Failure to adhere to policy can result in significant consequences, including termination.
    • Employees are reminded of their constant representation of Delta, regardless of the forum.

    Union and Industry Reactions

Several pilots and other employees are currently suspended, with the possibility of more facing similar disciplinary measures. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) is involved due to the unionized status of Delta’s pilot workforce.

The situation is further complicated by the generally conservative leanings of pilots at Delta, a contrast to the airline’s overall liberal stance. This tension is mirrored in a broader trend within the U.S. aviation industry.

Historical Context of Social Media Guidelines

Delta’s stringent social media rules have been a source of controversy since their inception in 2018. Unions argue that the guidelines could be misinterpreted, potentially stifling lawful discourse.

Nevertheless, Delta insists on maintaining standards of professionalism and respect to uphold brand integrity and customer trust, emphasizing its importance despite opposing viewpoints.

    Southwest Airlines Faces Similar Challenges

The impact of Charlie Kirk’s assassination extends beyond Delta, with Southwest Airlines (WN) also encountering challenges, particularly among its conservative-leaning pilot workforce. This reflects a pattern of political engagement among on-duty pilots.

Notably, in 2021, Southwest investigated claims that a pilot remarked “Let’s go Brandon,” perceived as a veiled insult toward then-President Joe Biden, over a public address system on a flight. Furthermore, a Southwest pilot displayed a political slogan on his crew bag, highlighting the ongoing issue.

Southwest has publicly announced its policy against employees expressing personal political beliefs while on duty.
