Plane Spotting in Johannesburg
As Africa’s busiest aviation hub, Johannesburg offers plane spotters a diverse mix of international widebody aircraft, regional African airlines, and vintage planes still in service. The city boasts three primary airports for enthusiasts to explore: O. R. Tambo International, Rand Airport, and Lanseria Airport, making it one of the premier locations on the continent to indulge in aviation interests.
O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB | FAOR)
This major gateway hosts two parallel runways and six compact terminal buildings. It serves as a hub for South African Airways, Airlink, FlySafair, and CemAir, and accommodates long-haul flights from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The airport also attracts many interesting African airlines, making it an excellent spot for noting rare aircraft.
Spotting Locations:
- International Terminal Viewing Area – Positioned on the third level, this spot offers views of aprons and gates, with the runway visible in the distance. While photography is through glass, conditions are favorable during afternoons. It offers free access and nearby cafés.
- Hi-Flyerz Aviation Bar – A unique bar and restaurant south of the airport, featuring a preserved Boeing 747 cockpit as part of its décor. Located under the approach path to runway 03R, it is ideal for photography and features live ATC broadcasts.
Spotting Hotel:
- Protea Hotel by Marriott O. R. Tambo – Situated opposite the terminal, it offers high rooms with views of the apron and distant sights of runway 21R. A long lens is recommended.
Spotting tip: Due to safety considerations, it is recommended to have a car while spotting outside in South Africa.
Rand Airport (QRA | FAGM)
Once Johannesburg’s primary airport, Rand is now a lively general aviation field to the east of the city, rich in history and hosting valuable aircraft collections.
- South African Airways Museum – Located at Rand, the museum features one of the most comprehensive collections in Africa, including two ex-SAA Boeing 747s, a 737-200, a DC-3, and DC-4, along with a section of a Boeing 707.
- Spotting – The old terminal offers a café with apron views, and on occasion, ramp access can be arranged. Skyclass Aviation operates classic DC-3s and DC-4s, providing charter services.
Lanseria Airport (HLA | FALA)
Situated northwest of Johannesburg, Lanseria serves as a secondary commercial airport primarily for regional flights but is also a major hub for business jets.
- Spotting – The terminal café offers great vistas of the single runway, with visible parking aprons on both sides where stored airliners can often be seen on the south side. Lanseria offers a quieter experience than O. R. Tambo, making it perfect for a half-day visit.
Why Spotters Love Johannesburg
Johannesburg provides enthusiasts with a perfect balance of activities: the bustling international hub of O. R. Tambo, Rand Airport’s historical aircraft treasures, and Lanseria’s consistent mix of business jets and regional flights. Few cities globally offer such variety in close proximity.
