American Airlines Enhances Network with New Florida Route

American Airlines has announced the introduction of a new destination in Florida from its significant hub in Charlotte. Starting in February, the airline will offer year-round flights between Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Vero Beach, located on Florida’s Treasure Coast. This expansion makes American the third commercial airline to operate out of Vero Beach and marks Charlotte’s 17th Florida destination under the carrier.

The launch is part of American’s ongoing expansion efforts from Charlotte, including new routes to ski destinations in Colorado and additional international flights. Tickets for the Charlotte to Vero Beach route are expected to be on sale by mid-September. Charlotte Douglas managed nearly 600,000 flights last year, with American Airlines responsible for about 90% of the airport’s traffic.

American Airlines Becomes Third Carrier Serving Vero Beach

Beginning February 12, American Airlines will initiate daily nonstop flights between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Vero Beach Regional Airport utilizing Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft. The flights are scheduled to depart Charlotte at 10:00 AM, arriving at Vero Beach by 12:10 PM. The return service will leave Vero Beach at 12:45 PM, reaching Charlotte at 2:40 PM.

American Airlines will be the sole carrier offering a direct connection between Charlotte and Vero Beach, joining Breeze Airways and JetBlue as service providers at Vero Beach. Breeze Airways debuted scheduled services to Vero Beach in 2023, while JetBlue recently launched flights from Boston and New York. The addition of American Airlines expands Vero Beach Airport’s connectivity to one of the Southeast’s largest hubs. Jordan Pack, Director of Domestic Network Planning at American Airlines, remarked, “Our flight to Charlotte aims to maximize nationwide connectivity, enhancing tourism in the region’s inviting atmosphere and scenic beaches. For local residents, this service offers a convenient option to travel nationwide with just one stop.”

Charlotte Hub Adds Focused Winter and Event Flights

American Airlines is introducing several other routes from Charlotte this year. Beginning October 3, 2025, a short-lived service to Albuquerque International Sunport Airport will operate, coinciding with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. These flights will run for ten days before the route is discontinued.

Additionally, a new transcontinental route to Palm Springs International Airport in California launches on December 20, 2025. This seasonal service will operate weekly through April 18, 2026, with a Boeing 737-800.

Charlotte: A Crucial Hub for American Airlines

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is one of American Airlines’ most significant hubs, a status it gained following a merger with US Airways in 2013, elevating it to the airline’s second-largest hub. Currently, American operates roughly 90% of all flights from Charlotte, including domestic and international services.

Data from Cirium reveals American has scheduled approximately 231,350 flights from Charlotte this year. In September alone, it executed over 17,900 flights. Domestically, cities such as Dallas/Fort Worth, New York LaGuardia, Orlando, and Miami are served with multiple daily flights, while international routes include destinations such as Toronto, Cancun, and London Heathrow. Recently, a new Athens route was also unveiled.
