China Eastern Airlines Sets New Record for Longest Direct Passenger Flight

China Eastern Airlines is launching the world’s longest direct passenger flight, connecting Shanghai (PVG) to Buenos Aires (EZE) beginning December 4, 2025. This groundbreaking service will cover a distance of over 12,200 miles, extending nearly 29 hours, and includes a layover in Auckland (AKL). Despite the stopover in New Zealand, passengers remain on the same aircraft, maintaining the classification as a direct flight.

    Historic Flight Distance and Duration

The Shanghai to Buenos Aires route establishes a new benchmark in air travel for both distance and duration. The outbound leg covers 12,229 miles and takes just under 26 hours, while the return flight lasts about 29 hours. This flight stands out by keeping passengers onboard during the two-and-a-half-hour stop in Auckland, reducing travel disruptions typical of connecting flights.

    Flight Schedule and Aircraft Details

    • Departures from Shanghai: Mondays and Thursdays
    • Flights from Buenos Aires: Tuesdays and Fridays

Although China Eastern has yet to officially announce which aircraft will be used, the Boeing 777-300ER is widely speculated by industry experts to be the likely choice due to its long-range capabilities, making it suitable for ultra-long-haul routes.

    Ticket Pricing and Class Options

Tickets for the service are available now, with prices starting at approximately £1,280 for a one-way journey from Shanghai to Buenos Aires, and £1,400 for the return trip. The airline provides First, Business, and Economy class options, accommodating the varied needs of travelers.

Impact on International Relations and Commerce

Besides its aviation significance, this route enhances diplomatic and economic connections between China and Argentina. It offers an alternative to routes typically routed through Europe or North America, strategically bypassing potential conflict zones.

    Redefining Air Routes Globally

Previously, the longest one-stop flight record was held by China Airlines’ Beijing to São Paulo route. China Eastern’s new flight surpasses this, enhancing its status in ultra-long-haul air travel and providing more direct access between Shanghai and Buenos Aires.

Travel Tips: Booking with Travel Agents

Travel expert Andrea Platania suggests that traditional travel agents can often offer fare prices that match or beat online rates if given proof, even when online fares become unavailable during booking. This strategy can result in significant savings on flights, such as the new China Eastern service.
