British Airways New Staff Guidelines
British Airways has introduced stringent new rules regarding the appearance and conduct of its cabin crew. Notably, the airline now restricts the consumption of coffee in public, permitting only water outside designated areas and this too must be done discreetly.
New Beverage Restrictions
The updated policy affects both flight attendants and pilots, many of whom depend on coffee during long schedules. Previously typical coffee runs to Starbucks before flights departing from London Heathrow (LHR) are no longer allowed for British Airways crew.
- Crew members may only consume drinks like coffee, tea, or soda in cafeterias or designated rest areas.
- Consumption while in uniform or in passenger areas is prohibited.
Focus on Professional Image
According to PYOK, these rules aim to maintain a professional and consistent image for the airline. The appearance code further regulates grooming standards, including approved shades of nail varnish, lipstick, hairstyles, and eyeglasses.
Uniform and Grooming Controversies
The new uniform, launched in late 2023 and designed by Savile Row tailor Ozwald Boateng, has been the subject of controversy. Many staff found a sheer blouse uncomfortable, with initial guidance instructing them to wear specific types of undergarments to ensure modesty. After receiving backlash from the official cabin crew union, British Airways promised design modifications like a thicker blouse fabric.
These grooming standards underscore the ongoing debate in aviation about professional appearance. While many airlines have relaxed regulations concerning makeup, footwear, and weight checks, British Airways’ approach is more stringent.
Commuting and Travel Limitations
The policy also affects “commuting”—when crew travel from another city or country to their base. British Airways has prohibited its staff from wearing uniforms while commuting on its flights, citing long-standing aviation authority regulations, though other airlines’ staff are allowed to commute in uniform, causing frustration among BA staff.
Social Media Restrictions
In addition to uniform rules, the airline has tightened its stance on social media. Cabin crew are banned from taking selfies, videos, or any photos in hotel rooms during layovers at destinations such as the Maldives, Cape Town, and Singapore. Even private account posts are restricted due to security concerns about potential location identification by criminals or terrorists using AI.
Furthermore, earlier rules had already banned photos or videos during professional engagement, including onboard aircraft, during check-in, or while walking through airport terminals. Violations could result in disciplinary actions or even dismissal, indicating the seriousness of these restrictions.
